Movie Review:
Dastoli Digital's Star Wars Collection Volume II pushes the fimmaking envelope with these two fantastic short films : "How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Superlaser" (refered to in this review as "Superlaser") and The Vorzyd Gambit, which is on par with the story and quality effects of Lucas' own Star Wars films.
"Superlaser" is based on the Stanley Kubric film, "How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Dr. Strangelove)" where in this fan movie, it is a round table of Imperial commanders speaking with Emperor Palpatine. They discuss the use of the Death Star Laser. This is a wonderful parody which seamlessly blends in the Star Wars Universe with such a poignant movie and it's relavent political statements.
The Vorzyd Gambit is a major milestone in the creative filmmaking by Dastoli Digital. Judging by the effects and story, these filmmakers have come a long way from their previous but important film, "The Crossing of Fate." Two brothers, one a Jedi and the other a pilot, join forces to bring down a crime syndicate using a casino as their cover. One of the many highlights of this film is the flying car chase which gives Lucas' rendition in Attack of the Clones some competition. Combined with an interesting story, the quality of this film is breathtaking. The sound quality is also amazing with it's explosion, vehicle sounds and city background ambience .
DVD Information:
Both films are done in Anamorphic Widescreen (Aspect Ratio 2.35:1) with animated interactive menus, scene selections, theatrical posters and cast and crew filmographies. The Vorzyd Gambit includes a feature called Holographic Elements which goes into detail on the many subtle and obvious background effects. Before and After is an excellent feature which shows the finished movie along with the rough shots (pre-effects). This feature alone is worth the purchase of this DVD.
Conclusion:
Star Wars Collection Volume II includes two creative films which balance out the brilliant special effects with an interesting story. The amount of time and professionalism shows in these two films. Expect to see the "bar" raised higher in the future as Dastoli Digital's film making reaches new heights.
