Movie Review:
Dastoli Digital Winter 2003 is a compilation of two shorts : The Lollygagger and The Up and Up. Both films are total opposites in terms of theme but they are both entertaining.
The Lollygagger appears to be a tribute to the silent pictures of Hollywood's Vaudville years. Along with the film grain look and text boxes to show spoken dialogue, the Lollygagger is suppose to be getting bread but is easily distracted on the way. Dastoli Digital does a fine job recreating this film genre with the help of a digital video camera and computerized editing.
The Up and Up starts with a man collapsing on train tracks in the snow with a suitcase in hand. Paul finds the suitcase and walks off with it. This cues the intro music to The Up and Up. The film has a 70s cop-like (ex. Serpico) feel to it even though this is not a police drama. Paul finds himself involved in more than the dead stranger's suitcase as higher-ups in the local political scene have their hands dirty with everything. This film is executed well with the music score, dialogue and the story which successfully concludes in the third act.
DVD Information:
The Lollygagger is filmed in full screen and The Up and Up is filmed in Anamorphic Widescreen (Aspect Ratio 2.35:1) Both films offer scene selections, posters, and cast and crew filmographies.
Conclusion:
Both The Lollygagger and The Up and Up offer a glimpse to the kinds of filmmaking Dastoli Digital is capable of. One of the particulars to this collection is the cinematography. Every shot tells a story and that is why this DVD is recommended.
